Humbling Coincidences !

Tuesday February 24 was in my final schedule to obtain all the canvass for the chairs and I decided to go to the old renowned center of furniture in this country, Tomas Pinpin Street in Chinatown, as it was the place I got my very first office furniture way back when I decided to go on my own as Architect. The importers are all based here and these are the suppliers of suppliers so to speak. But before I could leave Pasig the phone rang and it was the Office of the MMDA General Manager requesting for a meeting the next day at 3:00 p.m. So I went to Binondo via cab since parking is difficcult in Chinatown, used a sketch map I drew from the internet and started from the Binondo Church proceeding along T. Pinpin shop by shop until I hit Dasmarinas and then proceeded to Sta Cruz Church to get a cab at the Plaza Sta. Cruz. I recall that San Lorenzo Ruiz, the very First Filipino Saint was a sacristan at the Binondo Church and it was after him that we named Adrian Lorenzo after when he was born in 1985 in Kuala Lumpur, four years after Pope John Paul beatified him during his visit to Manila and I and Mynn was able to see him as that was the year I left for abroad. Click the image of the Altar of the Binondo Church above to zoom in to the image of San Lorenzo Ruiz at the left side. He was our Saint of Inspiration when we were in a strange country for almost 7 years at this coincidence of finding him in Binondo at this time felt like he was blessing Adrian Lorenzo because in the meeting the next day, MMDA Robert C. Nacianceno who joked that I am now exempted from color coding if I just show the card that he gave Adrian and me then announced that they now want to proceed with the Project. So on Ash Wednesay I posted the homily of John Paul II, the Pope who beatified the First Blessed Filipino in 1981 when I left the country and proclaimed his sainthood in 1987, the year our family now with two sons came home to the Philippines. Just like in the movie matrix, I have developed this habit of snapping what I see with my tiny digicam which I share with you here. I pray to San Lorenzo that Layag Islas sail to reality with Adrian, Mynn, and myself as part of the Team. Because of my having won a DOT-PTA International Resort Design Competition in 1992 I am put in charge as the Team Managing Architect because of my exposure to precedents, under Adrian as overall Head. My negotiations skills were quite useful that day and I earned some compliments from Adrian. These coincidences are very humbling. God willing, Layag Islas will be built ! Thank you all !
From Plaza Santa Cruz I taxied to Pasig then drove to Tanay for a Board Meeting of the Tanay Water District. Click the image to zoom in.

Addendum to the FINAL REPORT

I have inadvertently missed out the image of Chair Type A.2 in the last post. Here it is.

However, the recommended color is black:
a. It absorbs the dark color graffiti.
b. Easy to black out colored grafitti.
c. It is the classic color of High Tech Gyzmos.

Thank you all, again !

RECOMMENDATION

It is the humble recommendation of the Membership Committee that Type A.2 Chairs priced at P880.00 be selected for the Speech Laboratory fro the following reasons:
1. It is molded ergononomically and is more comfortable.
2. It is more durable because its has a steel frame.
3. It is very modern in design and is a good symbol of SICs paradigm shift to meet the technological/financial challenges of these times.
4. It is economical in the contaxt that while is supeior to the ordinary monoblock chair, the difference in qiality exceeds the difference in price.
5. Being not a run of the mill ordinary chair that any Tom, Dick and Harry uses, it is a fitting yet simple Gift of the Alumni to SIC during SICAAs Diamond Anniversary.
6. That pledges from individual, Classes, or Batches for one or more chairs would spread out the goodwill of this project.
7. That if only to make sustainable the spirit of SICAA in giving continuing support to the Alma Matter, each chair be marked in a tasteful and discrete manner through sicaa_comm graphics the Year of the Class or Batch from whom the Chair Gift came from.

B. AIR-CON

It is recommended that the existing Cash Donation on Hand of P18,600.00 be used to purchase one unit of Brand New Carrier 1.5 HP with a canvassed price of P18,505.15.

However, if the current inquiry I am still making will make it possible to purchase two second hand units (recommended) it will be refferred to the Executive Board for a Final Decision.

A copy of this message is posted to Pres. Gil B. Vibar of SICAA in America for information. Of course, the members of SICAA Greayer Toronto Area are likewise informed.

On the basis of the above prices of Brand New Air-con units, I am currently inquiring about prices of Used Units that are of good condition for long term use. The results of this inquiry will be posted separately. The need for the use of air-conditioning for the speech laboratory is equally necessary, to seal the noise out, to protect the computerized equipment and to maintain the temperature of comfort required in a facility such as this the users having headphones communicating jointly and separately with the Speech Instructor to identify and then point out in an interactive and systematic way the improvement of the student/pupils manner of speech. But SICAA will not stop with physical facility support. SICAA Research will continue to gather information about ways for the use of the Speech Laboratory to be maximized including its possible use as a Call Center Training Facility and a seasonal venue for Public Speaking Seminars sponsored by the SICAA. The Concept of the SICAA sponsoring Workshops and Seminars for Continuing Professional Education targeted towards updating of skills for livelihood uplift of the Alumni in partnership with San Ildefonso College is a fertile project for the near future. This may extend to Distance Learning once the basics are successfully laid out. This will make SICAANns all over the World play the role of Benefactor or Beneficiary as the case may be. This will put San Ildefonso College in a position equal to its pioneering role in the Pre-Technological Era as a Trail Blazer in this High Technology Millennium. What Father Bahl did that led to SIC's birth, is now in the hands of Monsignor Peter to elevate into a cutting edge Diamond Renewal. But while Father Bahl had only one "Tommy", Msgr. Peter has now several thousand "Tommy's" in the Ildefonsian Crusaders all over the World. The vision of San Ildefonso continues through this God's gift called technology. Have no doubts. Deus Super Omnia

It is the wish of the Graduating of Batch 2009 as communicated by Sister Aileen, that they be able to still have a "buena mano use" of the Speech Laboratory before their Graduation. Kaya guys, please post your pledges as soon as you can. The suggestions and comments of Ellen, Babbie, Ting, Benjie, Berting Laarni and all are being complied with by the SICAA Officers. Medyo naging busy lang ako the last few days dahil among others the MMDA Project of the Layag Islas Team may be proceeding soon, God willing, as I am handling the Techncial/Professional Management of the Team.We will post the Bank Account of the SICAA under the SICAA Constitutional Guidlelines anytime soonest. Keep your comments and suggestions coming. Have a great week-end to ALL

FATHER EDMOND BAHL Founder of San Ildefonso College

FATHER EDMOND BAHL

“I was a very young priest working in Tanay, my first mission assignment in the Philippines , a town about 30 miles from Manila, The war has ended six months before, but U.S. troops were arriving to replace the combat troops returning home.

I had just arrived from the states and cherished every sightseeing G.I. who came to or passed trough Tanay, hoping some of them would drop to renew my ties with back home. Sometimes they did, when they heard there was an American priest in the town.

In Tanay we had a big old Spanish stone church whose records went back to the time of Queen Elizabeth I, the church was about 165 feet long and formed one side of quadrangular two stories structure. I occupied about 1.6th of the remaining three sides.

When I first arrived in Tanay, I immediately noticed very few youngsters were around. Since I have been always very interested in young people, I asked “where are they?” and I told (was) they left Tanay on Monday morning to attend high school in the neighboring towns and returned late Friday afternoon. I began to look at my big challenge. At the light of my Coleman lamp, I studied statistics, costs, and school regulations. I kept looking at my measly bank account hoping that it would sometime double itself in value.

And then came Tommy Choma, an ensign Junior attached to the Navy Sea Frontier in Manila. He was aide to the commander of the Base and dedicated to the service. When Tommy, a New Yorker, heard that there was a priest from New York as pastor of the Church of Tanay, he had to meet him. When he heard that I was from Buffalo he laughed. We couldn’t have been farther apart but we were still from New York, the state, that is.

I enjoyed Tommy, he talked real big. “Hey Father, you’ve got it made here, what a plant. ! Why, this is perfect for high school ! What a sweet set-up ! What this town need is a school. A school, Padre a School ! “yeah, Tommy, yeah !” I said indifferently. :It sure would be nice !”

All I needed was someone like Tommy to talk me into this. He would give me his moral support and nothing more. And in a few months, he would ship out an I would be left holding the bag. “Listen Father, you got to get on the ball. One thing I learned in the navy, you got no place dragging your feet. Now listen, if you want a school here, you do don’t you, then just come in to see me at the base. I’m a friend of the commander and we’ll get you help. But get with it Padre, get with it. “That’s the way Tommy talked”.

During the next week, I kept thinking about the school and about Tommy. If I could get some help, maybe I could swing it. I needed so many things. I had a building and that was it. The roof leaked, but otherwise the building was solid. But nothing else. No partitions for classrooms, no books, no desks, no toilets. Just a lot of nothing.

The next week, I was in Manila at our headquarters. With some time on my hands I said to myself “ Now I’ll just go doen to the base and see if this guy is all he pretends”.

“I went down and asked Tommy. I got the red carpet treatment, and before I left, he took me to the PX and I came out with a pair of Navy shoes. And then I broached the subject of the school in Tanay . “ Well, that’s what I had been telling you. Just try me, Father, just try me. Father, just try me. I’ve been waiting to ear from you. Listen. I’ll talk to the commander , He’s a real fair guy. The base is phasing out. Thy’re getting rid of a lot of stuff and I know he’ll be happy to see it goes to a worthy cause. And yours is going to be the biggest worthy cause in my book.”

Two weeks later, I was back in Manila. There had been phone calls for me, I went down to the base. “Father, I’ve got some thins for you. You got a truck?” “Tommy, where will I get a truck?” “Never mind, I’ll commandeer one .”

So with a Navy man driving I headed out to Tanay with a load of wallboard perfect for classroom partitions. A week later “Father get over here quick, they’re cleaning out ffice equipment. “Can you use tarpaulins?” “Tommy, I can use anything. And tarpaulins will take care of the leaks in the roof till I get some money to repair it.”

And out to Tanay, I went, with a load of tarpaulins, wiring and outlets. Each Load would be weighed down with scrap lumber, and sheet of used plywood. Things were looking up. The office desks and file cabinets gave an air of authenticity to classrooms, library, teachers room and office. The wallboard made beautiful partition to section off classroom space. The tarpaulins kept out the tropical rains. Now all that was lacking were school desks and library books.

Tommy talked to the commander. We hired the civilian carpenters at the base to work for us on Saturdays, their day off. With power tools at the base workshop, they had enough parts from the scrap lumber to build 200 desks. We loaded the pieces on a Saturday afternoon and took them to Tanay to be put together by me and my boys at thei leisure time. And finally, a G.I. Library of over 1,500 books arrived through the kindbess of a Navy Chaplain. But the work began to show on me, I arrived on Tanay a robust 180 lbs. Tommy has whittled me down to a happy 149.

Tommy did not stay long enough in the Philippines to see the opening of the school in
Tanay. It opened with a flourish. We had 107 students in the first three years of high school, I often wondered if it all would have happened without Tommy. Two years later Father Price took over and continued with the same energy that Tommy displayed. Today, in Tanay, there is kindergarten, elementary grade school, a four year high school, and a four year accredited college.

Tanay rang the bell on Columban schools in the Philippines. San Ildefonso College led to many others in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Today, Columban Fathers are responsible for 126 schools in the Philippines.

Happy Teachers' Valentines Day Card

100 copies of SICAA's "Happy Teachers' Valentines" Day Card will be distributed to All Teachers, Non-Teaching Personnel, Administrators and Students of Education at San Ildefonso College tomorrow, the eve of Valentines Day. Like Before : Happy Teachers' Valentine Day !

As many Alumni clearly recalled Valentines Day was celebrated as Teacher's Day - a Special Day to show appreciation and love for the Heroic Role that Teachers played in the Life of Students and their Lifeblood Role they endure in upholding the objectives of San Ildefonso College. This was recalled by Laarni (HS79) in reponse to mcsicaa's (HS70) post reminding all to book Vlentine Roses early.

Ellen (HS65) confirmed Laarni's recall : "Yes, we had that and usually held on valentine's day. we Had mass, followed by pass in review and short program. Lunch in Tabing Dagat restaurant followed provided By the administration. I just couldn't remember if it was joint effort of the college and high school students council.that during her time in SIC "

Laarni added "We made sure that All our teachers received flowers and cards from us- male or female. Like Auntie Ellen said, there was the mass, the pass-in-review, the program and the carnival like atmosphere. There was a dedication booth, where students paid 25c for 2 songs--- songs like Boyfriends' "Dahil Mahal Kita" VST's "Ikaw ang aking Mahal" atbp. We also had the roses and lollipops booth . We also had custom cards created by Mary Eve(if I am not mistaken, Agnes was involved in this too). Hulaan nyo kung sino ang pasimuno? I won't tell!! That was our way of honoring our teachers and celebrating Valentine's Day. We were also able to raise funds that were used for retreats and recollections."

Because it is innate for Crusaders to protect and uphold tradition and because as Ildefonsians our Vision is Love* Above All, (*God is Love)the sicaa_comm is taking initiative for SICAA to give a Valentine Card or a Flower to each and every Teacher and Administrator of San Ildefonso College on the eve of Teachers' Valentines Day (because February 14th falls on a Saturday). This is a small token in preparation for the upcoming SICAA Diamond Awards to ALL SIC Teachers and to SIC as a Pioneering Teachers' School. Meanwhile please keep sending the list of teachers you can recall so that we don't miss anyone in the forthcoming Diamond Awards ! Thank you all !
